Each time through the function, we d be setting the value of myStatic back to 0. This function will always return a value of 0. Not what we want, eh The difference between the two functions The first version sets the value of myStatic to 0 by initialization (the value is specified within the declaration). The second version sets the value of myStatic to 0 by assignment (the value is specified after the declaration). If a variable is marked as static, any initialization is done once and once only. Be sure you set the initial value of your static variable in the declaration and not in an assignment statement.

The last topic we ll tackle in this chapter is string manipulation. Although we ve done some work with strings in previous chapters, there are a number of Standard Library functions that haven t been covered. Each of these functions requires that you include the file <string.h>. Here are a few examples.

Another big advantage of spreading your conditions over multiple nested statements is that you can add more statements in the different levels of the conditional statement, something you can t do with one conditional test.

strncpy()

I ll remind you of that in a bit when we write the value of our cookie Anyway, getCookie() has done its job at this point, so let s return the cookie value like so:.

The following are some neat tricks to help you make the most of conditional statements and save you some typing too.

strncpy() is declared as follows: char *strncpy( char *dest, const char *source, size_t n ); strncpy() copies the string pointed to by source into the string pointed to by dest, copying a maximum of n bytes. strncpy() copies each of the characters in source, including the terminating zero byte. Any characters following a zero byte are not copied, which leaves dest as a properly terminated string. strncpy() returns the pointer dest.

Conditional statements can start and end on a single line, like in the following script: if time_left = 0 then blow_whistle() This form of conditional statement is useful when the statement is simple because it makes the statement more concise and easier to read.

An important thing to remember about strncpy() is that you are responsible for ensuring that source is properly terminated and that enough memory is allocated for the string returned in dest. Here s an example of strncpy() in action:
