There are two common approaches to testing that are used with Entity Framework. The first approach is to test the business logic implemented in your objects. For this approach, we test against a fake database layer because our focus is on the business logic that governs the interactions of the objects and the rules that apply just before objects are persisted to the database. We illustrated this approach in Recipe 8-8. A second approach is to test both the business logic and the persistence layer by interacting with the real database. This approach is more extensive, but also more costly in term of time and resources. When implemented in an automated test harness, like the ones we often use in a continuous integration environment, we need to automate the creation and dropping of the test database. Where controllers are linked together, because each controller will effectively have a separate test class, it would make sense to have a separate program state tracking class, which survives across tests.
